1. Who is responsible

This policy covers both the DevCleaner macOS application and the website at devcleaner.app. They are treated separately below because they behave very differently.

2. The DevCleaner app

DevCleaner is a desktop utility. Scanning your disk, calculating sizes, and deleting caches all happen locally on your Mac. The contents of the files it finds, their paths, and the tools you use never leave your computer.

What the app sends

• Anonymous freed-space counter. After a successful cleanup the app sends one anonymized number — the total bytes freed. That single number is added to a global total. No identifiers, no file paths, no tool names, nothing personally identifying. You can turn this off entirely in Settings → General → Privacy.
• Optional in-app rating. After a few successful cleans the app may ask for a 1–5 star rating and an optional comment. If you submit and anonymous sharing is on, we store your random install id, app version, locale, stars, and comment — never an email — so we can improve the product and (for high scores) optionally show anonymous ratings on the website. Turn the toggle off and the rating sheet still works locally but nothing is uploaded.
• Pro Cloud Sync (paid Pro only). When you have an active paid license (lifetime or yearly — not trial) and monetization is enabled, the app may sync aggregate clean sessions to your private dashboard: session date/time, bytes freed, and category display names (e.g. “DerivedData”). It authenticates with your license key. File paths, manifests, and project names are never uploaded. Sign in on the web with a magic link sent to your purchase email. This is separate from the anonymous stats toggle.
• Update checks. To deliver updates, the app periodically checks whether a newer version exists. This is a standard web request and does not transmit a system profile. Like any web request it momentarily exposes your IP address and app version to the server, which is not stored for tracking.

The app has no password accounts and no third-party analytics SDKs. Pro dashboard access uses magic-link email only.

Pro licensing and payments

If you activate a Pro license or start a free trial in the app, the following data is transmitted:

• License activation: Your license key, a unique instance ID for your Mac, your Mac's name, and (if provided) your email address are sent to our server to validate and activate your license. This data is stored securely and is necessary to manage your license across multiple devices (max 3 Macs per license).
• Trial start: When you start a 14-day free trial, the start date is stored locally in your Mac's Keychain. If you have anonymous sharing on (Settings → General → Privacy, the same toggle as the freed-space counter), the app also sends an anonymous trial-start signal — your random install id plus app and OS version, no email and nothing personally identifying — so we can measure how many trials convert to a purchase. Turn the toggle off and nothing is sent.
• Payment processing: When you purchase a license through Stripe, Stripe receives your email, purchase plan (yearly or lifetime), and payment information. We receive confirmation of the purchase to manage your license status and send you your license key by email.
• License storage: Your license key and instance ID are stored securely in your Mac's Keychain, not in plain text or cloud sync.
• Offline grace: The app can validate your license once and then work offline for up to 14 days based on that last validation. No data is sent during offline use.
• Periodic revalidation: Your license is revalidated periodically when online to check expiry status and confirm activation limits. This is necessary to enforce the license terms (e.g., max 3 Macs per license). This process does not collect any additional data beyond what is necessary for license validation.

No personal information is retained or tracked beyond what is necessary to operate the license system. Stripe Payments acts as our payment processor. See Stripe's Privacy Policy for how they handle payment data.

3. The website

When you visit devcleaner.app we use a small set of third-party services to understand traffic and to measure the effect of advertising. These set cookies and may receive your IP address, browser/device information, and the pages you view.

Services we use

Download counter

When you download the app, the request passes through a small counter that increments a total number of downloads. It stores only a running count. It does not store your IP address or build a profile of you.

4. Advertising and the Reddit pixel

We advertise DevCleaner on Reddit. To know whether those ads actually lead to downloads, we use the Reddit Pixel (in your browser) together with Reddit's Conversions API (on our server). When you arrive from a Reddit ad, a click identifier is stored in a cookie; if you later download the app, our server reports that download to Reddit so the ad can be credited.

Where personal data such as your IP address or email is sent to Reddit through the Conversions API, it is hashed (irreversibly scrambled) before it leaves our server. This data is used for ad measurement and to build audiences for future ads. You can limit ad personalisation in your Reddit account settings.

5. Cookies

The cookies on this site come from the analytics and advertising services listed above. None of them are required for the site to function, they exist to measure usage and advertising. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time; the site will still work.

6. Legal basis (GDPR)

For visitors in the European Economic Area, we process website data on these bases under the GDPR:

• Consent for analytics and advertising cookies and the advertising pixel, where consent is required.
• Legitimate interest in keeping the service secure, serving the site, and understanding aggregate, non-identifying usage.
• Performance of a service for the basic technical handling needed to deliver the page and the download you requested.

The anonymous freed-space number sent by the app is not personal data, as it cannot be linked back to you.

7. International transfers

Google, Microsoft, and Reddit are based in the United States, so using their services means some data is processed outside the European Economic Area. These providers rely on recognised transfer mechanisms such as the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and Standard Contractual Clauses.

8. How long data is kept

• Analytics and advertising data is retained according to each provider's own retention periods (see their policies above).
• The global counters (bytes freed, downloads) are aggregate numbers with no personal data and are kept indefinitely.
• Server logs are kept only briefly for security and troubleshooting, then rotated out.

9. Your rights

If you are in the EEA or UK, you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to the processing of your personal data, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these, email hello@devcleaner.app.

You also have the right to complain to a supervisory authority. In the Czech Republic this is the Office for Personal Data Protection (Úřad pro ochranu osobních údajů).

10. Children

DevCleaner is a tool for developers and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

11. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with an updated date at the top. Material changes will be reflected in the app's release notes or on the site.

FAQ

Does DevCleaner collect my file paths?

No. The app processes files locally. The only optional upload is an anonymous bytes-freed number with no paths or identifiers.

How do I opt out of analytics?

Disable Share anonymous stats in the app (Settings → General → Privacy). Website cookies can be blocked in your browser.
